Tropical Roll

This Tropical Roll combines creamy avocado with a spicy salmon filling, then finishes with sweet slices of fresh mango, black sesame seeds and finely chopped leek. It’s a delicious balance of spicy, sweet and savory flavors that’s perfect for homemade sushi nights.

Filling

  • 50 g sushi-grade salmon, diced
  • 1½ tsp spicy mayonnaise
  • ¼ avocado, sliced

Topping

  • ¼ ripe mango, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp finely chopped leek
  • ½ tsp black sesame seeds

To serve

  • Soy sauce
  • Pickled ginger
  • Wasabi

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sushi rice according to the Perfect Sushi Rice (Base Method) and allow it to cool.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the diced salmon with the spicy mayonnaise.
  3. Place a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat.
  4. Spread a thin, even layer of sushi rice over the nori.
  5. Arrange the avocado slices and spicy salmon filling across the center of the rice.
  6. Roll tightly using the bamboo mat.
  7. Lay the mango slices over the top of the roll and gently press them into place using plastic wrap or the sushi mat.
  8. Slice the roll into 8 equal pieces with a sharp, damp knife.
  9. Sprinkle with finely chopped leek and black sesame seeds before serving.

Notes & Pro Tips

  • Use sushi-grade salmon intended for raw consumption.
  • Choose a ripe but firm mango so the slices hold their shape.
  • Wet the knife between each cut for clean, even slices.
  • If the mango topping slides, chill the roll for 10–15 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve immediately for the best flavor and texture.
